After a catastrophic storm in an area an insurer designates, a roof repair or replacement contract with a homeowner who lives there must say in bold type that you may cancel within 72 hours after your insurer denies the claim, and that you may cancel for any reason within four business days after signing (A.R.S. 32-1158.02). A.R.S. 32-1158.02, subsection B: "A residential owner of a property or casualty insurance policy has the right to cancel the contract described in subsection A of this section within seventy-two hours after the insured owner has been notified by the insurer that the claim has been denied." Subsection A covers contracts by a licensed contractor to repair or replace a residential roof, or other work in the contractor law, after damage resulting directly from a catastrophic storm in an area designated by an insurer, with a buyer who lives in the home or will after the work. The four business day right in subsection C is in addition to this one. (source: Arizona State Legislature)

To cancel within four business days, give written notice to the contractor's address in the contract; no special form is needed. Within ten days after a cancellation, the contractor must return your payments, though it may keep reasonable pay for emergency services it itemized for you. (source: Arizona State Legislature)

The down payment cannot be more than 50 percent of the total contract, and changes to the work must be in a written change order signed by the homeowner. Breaking these rules is grounds for license suspension or revocation. (source: Arizona State Legislature)

A contractor may not ask you to sign while the loss is still happening or while firefighters or other public safety crews are responding at the home, except for work to restore essential services or prevent further immediate damage. (source: Arizona State Legislature)
